Hi, I’m Allison, and just like you, I’ve struggled with my weight off and on…really my whole life.
In my forties, though, things got pretty hectic. Stress, lack of sleep, the demands of being a wife, mom, running a business, managing an integrative therapies program at one of the nation’s top hospitals, and coordinating care for an elderly parent…it all became too much. I wasn’t prioritizing myself. I wasn’t doing the things I KNEW I should be doing to maintain my health, and even the times I DID commit to a few weeks of workouts 3x/week and salads for lunch, well…something just wasn’t working. The weight just wasn’t coming off, and I was still feeling awful all the time.
I looked around me, and it seemed like everyone was going through the same thing. Being a woman in her 40’s just meant stress, lack of self care, and weight gain, right? I mean, this is what we do, isn’t it? We have careers to tend to, errands to run, aging parents to manage, kids to ferry around, and spouses. Our hormones are all outta whack and we’re stressed to the max and not sleeping well. It’s the hormones, right??? Gotta be the hormones. Maybe some inflammation. I give up. More wine please. As an acupuncturist, herbalist, hypnotherapist, ACSM certified personal trainer, and former ultramarathoner, competitive powerlifter and strongman competitor, (I was New Hampshire’s 4th strongest woman in 2012!) I KNOW how the body works. I mean, that’s a heck of a laundry list of credentials, and I was STILL exhausted all the time, overweight, foggy headed, and miserable. So, when the pandemic hit in 2020, after the initial shock wore off, I decided to make my own health and fitness a priority, and really dig into why my own previous attempts at seizing control of my health had failed.
You see, I always have had a habit of pushing my body to the absolute limit. As someone who became a competitive athlete in my late 30’s / early 40’s, that continued to work for me…until it didn’t. Anyone who knows me knows, I have the discipline and mental toughness of a Navy Seal, but after getting up Every. Single. Day. at 4:30 am to go to an intense boot camp class for literally MONTHS on end, I had lost a handful of inches, and a grand total of 4 pounds. I also was exhausted, miserable, and in EXCRUCIATING pain, because a 49 year old woman who weighs 215 pounds at 5’5” tall does not tolerate a class that includes 300 jumping jacks a day, 5 days a week very well. #ouch.
Stress is stress, no matter how you slice it, and it’s not good for the body in large doses. It has some pretty bad side effects, and one of those bad side effects is often weight gain, and the inability to lose it.
